Showing Up for Your Future Self: The Journey from Self-Doubt to Self-Mastery
When I first started my business, it wasn’t just about creating a successful venture. It was about proving something to myself. I was doing it for the part of me that doubted my abilities. The part that believed I wasn’t enough, or that I didn’t deserve success. I wanted to prove her wrong.
But as time has gone on, I’ve realized something important — it’s not just about proving my past self wrong anymore. It’s about showing up for my future self. Now, I work not only to avoid disappointing that earlier version of me, but also to ensure that the person I’m becoming is proud of who I am today. In other words, I am building the future that I want to live, and every action I take now is an investment in the person I will become.
Today’s Challenge: Showing Up for Your Future Self
This shift in mindset has sparked a new challenge that I encourage you to take on: How can you show up for the future version of yourself?
Think about it for a moment. What does your future self look like? If you want to become the best salesperson on your team, what does that version of you do differently than the person you are today? How does the best salesperson show up to work each day?
This isn’t about wishful thinking or vague goals. This is about actively embodying the habits and mindset of the person you’re striving to become. It's about asking yourself: What does the 2.0 version of me look like? What habits, skills, and behaviors do they exhibit? And most importantly — how can I begin to live like that person today?
Building the Habits of Your Future Self
The future you is not an abstract idea. It’s a reflection of the habits and actions you choose today. Every step you take today is a building block for tomorrow. If you want to be that top salesperson, start by showing up like one. That doesn’t just mean having the skills — it means developing the mindset and behaviors that top performers have.
Here are some questions to help guide you toward your future self:
What are your future self’s daily habits?
Do they wake up early, read books, or meditate?
Do they consistently practice their craft, honing their skills?
Are they organized, setting clear goals and tracking their progress?
How does your future self handle setbacks?
When they face a challenge, do they give up or keep pushing?
Do they view failure as an opportunity to learn and grow?
How does your future self interact with others?
Are they a team player who encourages others?
Do they lead by example, inspiring and motivating their peers?
Small Habits, Big Results
You don’t need to make radical changes all at once. Instead, focus on one or two small habits that can shift you in the right direction. If you want to be the best salesperson, for example, it could be as simple as starting your day with a quick sales strategy review, committing to one more cold call or client meeting each week, or setting aside time for personal development.
Over time, these seemingly small actions compound, building momentum and shifting your mindset. Before you know it, you’ll be living as the 2.0 version of yourself — the person you always knew you could become.
The Power of Self-Belief and Consistency
Showing up for your future self is a powerful way to reinforce your belief in your own potential. It’s no longer just about proving your worth to others or overcoming past doubts. It’s about honoring the vision of who you want to be and working consistently toward that person.
Every day is an opportunity to close the gap between who you are now and who you want to become. By developing the right habits and mindset, you’ll not only avoid letting down your future self — you’ll be proud of the journey you took to get there.
What habits can you start developing today to show up for your future self?
Start small. Set clear intentions. And remember — the 2.0 version of you is waiting, but you have to do the work today to meet them.
