Reframing Stress: Embracing Change and Growth in Stress Awareness Month
April is Stress Awareness Month, and it's a time to reflect not only on the stressors in our lives but also on how we perceive and respond to them. Even as someone who educates others about managing stress, I find myself needing to pause for self-check-ins. Yes, I get stressed too—we all do because we are all human.
The reality is, stress is an inherent part of life, and it isn't going anywhere. But what if we could change the way we look at stress? What if we viewed stress not just as a burden, but as a sign of change—and more importantly, as a potential catalyst for growth?
Understanding Stress, Change, and Growth
To illustrate, let's consider some personal examples:
Stress: My life became stressful when I had a baby.
Change: My life changed significantly when I had a baby.
Growth: My life grew richer and more fulfilling when I had a baby.
Similarly, when starting my own business:
Stress: I experienced a lot of stress about my lifestyle and personal doubts.
Change: Starting my business brought numerous changes to my lifestyle and self-perception.
Growth: These changes led to significant personal and professional growth.
These reflections show how closely stress is linked to our experiences of change and growth. By reframing our stressful experiences as opportunities for growth, we can alter our emotional responses to them and find more resilience in the face of challenges.
Changing Our Perception of Stress
Changing our perception of stress involves a few key strategies:
Acknowledge the Stress: Recognizing and accepting that you are stressed is the first step toward managing it effectively.
Identify the Change: Look at what has changed or is changing in your life. Understanding the source of stress can sometimes make it less intimidating.
Seek the Growth: Ask yourself, "How can this stress or change help me grow?" Whether it's gaining new skills, emotional resilience, or a deeper understanding of yourself, there's often a silver lining.
Reframe the Narrative: Instead of thinking, "This is too hard," try to think, "This is an opportunity for me to learn and adapt."
A Challenge for You
This Stress Awareness Month, I challenge you to apply this reframing exercise to your own life. When you encounter stress, pause and ask yourself:
What is changing in my life right now?
How is this change helping me to grow?
It might be easier said than done, but even attempting to view stressful situations through this lens can make a big difference in how you experience and react to them.
